Film Study Stages

If there is a new skill that you want to develop, watching video footage can be a great way to learn. You can analyse techniques and translate that knowledge into practice.

Below is a basic outline on the stages of film study for boxing:

1. Know Your Why

Choose a focus, be it technique, effectiveness, tactics, movement, decision-making, or whatever holds your interest.

2. Eyes, Not Ears

Turn down the volume and just watch. Include slow motion and fast-motion, and watch multiple bouts if possible.

3. Word Power

Notice a habit or pattern? Name it, break it down, and study why it worked (or didn’t work). Pause, reflect and write down notes.

4. Skill to Drill

How does the skill relate to more basic movements? Can these be arranged in progression? Could the skill be learned with the aid of a prop? Does it require a partner?

5. Drill to Skill

What verbal and non-verbal skills are required to coach others in this skill? How might a total beginner learn it best? How might the experienced learn it best?

6. Get Creative

Brainstorm other uses for the skill. Could it be part of a different combination? Could it serve a different purpose?
