7 Styles of Padwork in Boxing

Learn these 7 styles of padwork to better understand combinations and add variety to your boxing training:

1. Single Punches

  1. Maintain stance.

  2. Turn from the hips.

  3. Keep the guard up.

  4. Tuck the chin.

  5. Exhale with the punch.

2. Short Combination

  1. Put 2-4 punches together.

  2. Repeat for 10-20 repetitions.

  3. Start moving.

  4. Throw the combination on command.

3. Stacking

  1. Start with a combination, call it A.

  2. Repeat for 10-20 repetitions.

  3. Start a new combination, call it B.

  4. Repeat for 10-20 repetitions.

  5. Put A and B together.

4. Layering

  1. Start with a short combination.

  2. Repeat for 5-10 repetitions.

  3. Add another combination to it.

  4. Repeat for 5-10 repetitions.

  5. Keep adding layers.

5. Looping

  1. Repeat a combination on loop.

  2. Plug in a punch or combination at the end of the looped combination.

  3. Keep looping after the plug.

6. Names & Cues

  1. Practice a combination.

  2. Give it a name, or non-verbal cue.

  3. Perform the combination on command.

  4. Build a collection of named and cued combinations.

7. Old School

  1. Pad holder moves like an opponent.

  2. Single punches or combinations.

  3. Constant pressure, no rest.

Key Points

  1. Keep the pads at correct height.

  2. Keep the pads close together.

  3. Give back some resistance.

Common Mistakes

  1. Pads too low or too high.

  2. Pads too wide.

  3. Passive, or over-active (!)
